The International Monetary Fund is expected to send a mission to Pakistan in the coming weeks for the next reviews of the country's Extended Fund Facility and Resilience and Sustainability Facility, marking the next major stage in Islamabad's ongoing engagement with the global lender. The visit will also include Article IV consultations, which form part of the IMF's regular assessment of member economies.

IMF Resident Representative to Pakistan Mahir Banici said on Friday that the mission was expected to arrive in the coming weeks for the programme review and Article IV discussions. The upcoming negotiations will cover the fourth review under the Extended Fund Facility and the third review under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility.

Pakistan's Extended Fund Facility was approved by the IMF Executive Board in the final week of September 2024. The 37-month arrangement is worth about $7 billion, equivalent to SDR 5.32 billion, and has remained a central part of Pakistan's external financing and economic stabilisation framework.

Pakistan subsequently sought support through the Resilience and Sustainability Facility in October 2024. A staff-level agreement for a 28-month arrangement worth about $1.3 billion was reached on March 25, 2025, alongside the first review of the Extended Fund Facility. The two programmes are now being assessed in parallel as Pakistan proceeds through their respective review cycles.

If IMF staff and Pakistani authorities reach a staff-level agreement following the upcoming fourth EFF review and third RSF review, the agreement will still require approval from the IMF Executive Board. Successful completion of that process would give Pakistan access to approximately $1 billion under the Extended Fund Facility and another $200 million through the Resilience and Sustainability Facility.

Pakistan has already received about $4.8 billion through the two arrangements. Ahead of the expected mission, the Ministry of Finance has instructed relevant ministries and government divisions to complete preparations and provide updated information on the implementation of commitments agreed under the programmes. Those preparations are expected to form part of the government's engagement with the visiting team.

The mission is likely to begin its engagements in Karachi, where discussions are expected with officials of the State Bank of Pakistan, before moving to Islamabad for meetings with the federal government's economic team. The next steps will depend on the outcome of those talks, completion of the programme assessments and subsequent Executive Board consideration, making the visit an important milestone for Pakistan's continuing IMF programme and access to further financing.
