Fire Guts Karachi Mayor's Office at KMC Headquarters

KARACHI: A fire at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation headquarters on M.A. Jinnah Road completely destroyed the office of Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Tuesday, prompting an emergency response at one of the city's main municipal administrative buildings. Fire brigade officials said the blaze was extinguished and no casualties were reported.

According to officials, the fire originated in a kitchen located next to the mayor's office before spreading into the office itself. The flames caused extensive damage to the mayor's workplace, although authorities had not immediately disclosed a detailed assessment of losses to furniture, records, equipment or other property inside the affected section of the headquarters.

Three fire tenders were deployed to the KMC headquarters as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. The incident came a day after another significant fire was reported at a clothes factory in Karachi's Landhi Export Processing Zone. That blaze caused extensive damage to the industrial facility, and rescue authorities later declared the affected building dangerous. The two incidents occurring on successive days have again put attention on fire emergencies and building safety in Pakistan's largest city, though authorities have not indicated any connection between them.

Karachi has repeatedly faced serious fires in commercial, industrial and public buildings, making the effectiveness of emergency response and subsequent safety inspections an important public concern. In the latest case, the absence of reported casualties limited the human impact, but the destruction inside the mayor's office is likely to lead to an assessment of structural and administrative damage before the affected area can return to normal use.
