Tiger and Two Cubs Reported in Islamabad's Gulberg Greens, Triggering Alert

ISLAMABAD: A reported sighting of a Bengal tiger accompanied by two cubs triggered alarm in Islamabad's Gulberg Greens on Thursday evening, prompting security teams and wildlife authorities to intensify monitoring while residents were advised to remain indoors. The animals were reportedly seen in B Block, Street 15, and photographs and videos circulated rapidly through local community groups.

Housing society security personnel went on high alert after residents reported seeing the tiger and cubs in the populated neighbourhood. Families were urged to keep children inside, avoid approaching the animals and immediately report any further sightings. Security teams increased patrols and surveillance as concern grew over the potential danger posed by a large wild animal moving through a residential area, particularly a mother accompanied by cubs.

The Islamabad Wildlife Management Board, Capital Development Authority and district administration later carried out a search operation following reports of a big cat in the area. Authorities said the search did not uncover physical evidence confirming the animal's location, but monitoring would continue. Residents were asked to remain calm and contact the relevant authorities rather than attempting to track, photograph or confront any wild animal themselves.

Residents described widespread concern, especially among families with young children. Some questioned how a dangerous exotic animal could have reached or been kept near a densely populated housing community. The presence of two cubs added to the concern because wildlife experts generally treat encounters involving mothers and young animals with particular caution, as protective behaviour can make close approaches especially dangerous.

Security management also engaged wildlife personnel to help trace the reported tiger and its cubs and manage any confirmed encounter safely. Officials and residents cautioned people against gathering around suspected locations for photographs or videos, warning that crowds could increase the risk to both humans and animals. No injuries or attacks had been officially reported in connection with the sighting at the time of the initial response.

The episode has renewed questions over the keeping of exotic and potentially dangerous wildlife in or near residential areas. Authorities had not established whether the reported animals belonged to a private owner, had escaped from captivity or had reached the locality from another location. Residents offered various theories, including the possibility that recent heavy rains had disturbed an animal's shelter, but wildlife specialists had not confirmed the reason for the reported presence in Gulberg Greens.

Islamabad has experienced other big-cat sightings in recent months, although those incidents involved species naturally found in the surrounding region. Leopards have previously been reported near the International Islamic University Islamabad and within the Margalla Hills National Park, where camera traps have documented their presence. A Bengal tiger, however, is not native to Pakistan's wild ecosystems, making the latest report particularly unusual and increasing scrutiny over the possible private possession of exotic animals.

Authorities are expected to continue surveillance and respond to any fresh evidence or confirmed sighting. Residents have been advised to keep a safe distance from wildlife, secure children and pets indoors where necessary, and avoid taking independent action. The incident has quickly become one of the capital's most discussed developments of the evening as videos and images spread online, while the immediate priority remains establishing the animals' whereabouts and ensuring public safety.
