Key points

- The recognition renews attention on promised support for his family and the city’s fire-safety deficiencies.
President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the Tamgha-e-Shujaat for firefighter Furqan, who lost his life while participating in rescue operations during the deadly Gul Plaza fire in Karachi. The national civil award recognises the courage he displayed while attempting to protect people trapped inside the burning commercial building.
The decision follows efforts by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab to secure national recognition for the firefighter’s sacrifice. Furqan was part of the emergency team sent into the building as flames spread through shops containing clothing, cosmetics, plastic goods and other combustible materials.
The fire erupted at Gul Plaza on M.A. Jinnah Road on the night of January 17, 2026. Firefighting and rescue operations continued for approximately 36 hours before the blaze was brought under control on the morning of January 19, highlighting the scale and complexity of the emergency faced by responders.
During the operation, Furqan was working in a section of the damaged building when debris collapsed around him. He became trapped in the wreckage and died while carrying out his duties. His death prompted public tributes to firefighters who enter unstable buildings with limited time, visibility and protection to rescue civilians.
The presidency had praised his professional courage immediately after the tragedy and asked the Sindh government to nominate him for a civil award. The latest approval completes that recognition process and places his sacrifice among acts of bravery formally honoured by the state.
Municipal authorities had also announced financial and institutional support for his family following his death. Those commitments included financial assistance, employment for his widow, support for his child’s education and renaming the Nazimabad Fire Station in his honour. The implementation of those measures remains an important part of the government’s responsibility to the family.
The Gul Plaza disaster also exposed broader weaknesses in fire prevention and emergency readiness across Karachi’s densely occupied commercial buildings. After the incident, the president called for stronger enforcement of fire-safety regulations and modernised inspection systems for residential and commercial properties throughout Sindh.
Recognition of an individual firefighter cannot substitute for investment in the service he represented. Karachi requires adequately staffed fire stations, reliable protective equipment, specialised rescue training, functioning building exits and regular safety inspections if similar losses are to be prevented.
The Tamgha-e-Shujaat will preserve Furqan’s sacrifice in the national record, but the lasting measure of the response will be whether authorities fulfil the promises made to his family and implement reforms that reduce the dangers faced by firefighters and the public during future emergencies.
