KP Police Form Elite Combat Unit to Target Terror Networks

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police are moving to establish a new Special Combat Unit, a dedicated strike force designed to conduct targeted counterterrorism operations in the province’s most sensitive areas.

The decision follows approval from the KP Police Policy Board, after which detailed rules and regulations were framed for the proposed unit. The force is expected to operate as a specialised formation rather than a routine policing wing, with its members assigned to intelligence-based operations against terrorist networks.

According to official details, the unit will initially include 400 personnel drawn from the police’s elite force. Those selected will undergo medical, psychological and physical screening before being inducted, ensuring that the formation is staffed by officers capable of handling high-risk field assignments.

KP Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed described the regulatory framework for the new unit as an important step for the provincial police. He said the force would be trained and equipped according to modern operational demands, including advanced combat methods, drone-related capabilities and specialised field skills.

The operational design sets the Special Combat Unit apart from conventional police deployment. Companies of around 45 personnel will be posted in frontline districts for 90-day cycles, where they will work under district police officers or Counter Terrorism Department commanders during targeted operations.

After completing a frontline cycle, personnel will return for mandatory training at the Elite Police Training Centre in Nowshera. That rotation is intended to refresh combat skills, assess field experiences and ensure that lessons from operations are fed back into future training.

The move comes at a time when Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continues to face serious security challenges, particularly in districts affected by militant activity, cross-border movement and attacks on police posts. Police forces in the province have increasingly found themselves on the front line of Pakistan’s internal security response.

Specialised police units have become more important as terrorism tactics evolve beyond conventional attacks. The use of smaller militant cells, difficult terrain, night movement and technology-supported surveillance has pushed law enforcement agencies to build formations that can respond faster and operate with better coordination.

For Pakistan, the new KP force carries significance beyond provincial policing. A stronger counterterrorism capacity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa can help protect communities, secure highways and reduce pressure on the broader national security system at a time when public confidence depends heavily on visible state protection.

The next test will be implementation. Authorities will need to ensure transparent recruitment, strong command discipline, modern equipment, human rights safeguards and sustained funding so that the Special Combat Unit becomes an effective security tool rather than another under-resourced formation.
