Karachi Rain Alert: PMD Forecasts Drizzle and Showers Till Friday

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast intermittent drizzle, light rain and dusty winds in Karachi through Friday as a westerly weather system continues to influence Sindh and parts of the wider region.

According to the forecast, the city may experience cloudy intervals, scattered showers and light rain at night, while the intensity of winds could vary across different localities. The advisory has drawn public attention because even brief rain spells in Karachi can disrupt traffic, electricity supply and daily commuting.

The Met Office said the active weather system is also likely to affect several northern districts of Sindh, where stronger conditions are expected. Areas including Jacobabad, Kashmore, Qambar Shahdadkot, Shikarpur and Ghotki may face dusty winds, windstorms and moderate rain with thunderstorms until June 20.

Weather officials also indicated that light to moderate rain may occur in Sukkur, Dadu, Khairpur, Sanghar, Naushahro Feroze, Shaheed Benazirabad and Jamshoro during the same period. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain cautious, especially where strong winds can damage weak structures, billboards, solar panels and power infrastructure.

The PMD’s latest outlook follows an earlier national weather advisory that warned of rain, windstorms, thunderstorms and isolated heavy downpours across several parts of Pakistan between June 16 and June 20. The department linked the spell to moist currents from the Arabian Sea and a westerly wave affecting upper and central parts of the country.

Karachi often faces a complicated mix of weather-related risks during such systems. Light drizzle can bring short-term relief from heat and humidity, but stronger winds and sudden showers may create problems on roads already vulnerable to congestion, poor drainage and visibility issues.

The forecast is also important for northern Sindh, where dusty winds and thunderstorms can affect agriculture, transport and power supply. Farmers, travellers and local administrations are likely to monitor the situation closely as the spell continues toward the end of the week.

In recent years, changing weather patterns have made advance warnings increasingly important for major Pakistani cities. Short but intense rain events can overwhelm weak urban infrastructure, while windstorms can disrupt electricity networks and damage temporary structures in both urban and rural areas.

For Karachi residents, the immediate impact will depend on how widely rain clouds develop over the city and whether the showers remain light or intensify in pockets. Authorities are expected to keep an eye on low-lying areas, roadside drainage points and traffic corridors where even limited rainfall can cause delays.

The next update from the Met Office will be closely watched as the westerly system moves through the region. Until the weather stabilises, citizens have been urged to follow official advisories, avoid unnecessary exposure during strong winds and take precautions while travelling during rain or reduced visibility.
