Imran Khan Undergoes Fifth Eye Treatment at Islamabad’s Pims

Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad on Monday for follow-up treatment linked to his ongoing eye condition. The development came as his medical care continues to remain a politically sensitive issue because he has been imprisoned since 2023.

According to the hospital’s statement, Imran received a fifth anti-VEGF intravitreal injection as part of treatment for his right eye. The procedure was carried out after doctors examined him and found him clinically stable before moving ahead with the scheduled intervention.

Medical officials also performed optical coherence tomography, a scan used to assess the condition of the retina, and said the results showed clinical improvement. The hospital said the procedure was conducted after informed consent and under standard monitoring in the operating theatre.

The statement added that surgeons administered the injection under microscopic guidance while following required precautionary protocols. Imran remained stable before, during and after the procedure, and was later discharged with follow-up instructions and related medical documents.

The latest treatment follows a series of earlier procedures that began after his right central retinal vein occlusion came to public attention earlier this year. He previously underwent similar treatment in January, February, March and April, with the most recent earlier procedure reported on April 28.

The medical issue has also become part of a wider political dispute between the government and the opposition. PTI and allied opposition voices have repeatedly accused the authorities of failing to ensure full transparency in Imran’s treatment and of not allowing his personal doctors sufficient access to him.

Government representatives have rejected those allegations, maintaining that necessary medical care is being provided under the rules applicable to prisoners. Opposition figures, however, have continued to demand that the former premier be shifted to Shifa International Hospital for examination and treatment under doctors trusted by his family and party.

The matter carries strong political significance because Imran remains one of Pakistan’s most prominent opposition figures despite being behind bars. Any development linked to his health quickly becomes a national talking point, raising questions about prison medical facilities, transparency in high-profile custody cases and the state’s responsibility toward detained political leaders.

The next stage will depend on further medical assessments and whether doctors recommend additional follow-up procedures. For now, the hospital’s statement indicates that Imran was stable after the latest injection, while political debate over access, oversight and future treatment is likely to continue.
