Two Policemen Martyred in Bannu Targeted Attacks

Two police constables were martyred in separate targeted attacks in Bannu district on Friday, deepening security concerns in one of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s most volatile areas. Officials said both incidents appeared to be deliberate acts of terrorism aimed at police personnel serving in the region.

The first attack took place on Friday morning on Bannu-Miranshah Road near Azad Mandi, where Constable Mishqat Amir was returning home after attending a gathering at the Hamza Tablighi Centre. Initial reports said unidentified armed men opened fire on him, leaving him critically wounded before he died at the scene.

A second incident occurred late Thursday night in Saidgi Baka Khel, where Constable Muhammad Roshan was attacked outside his residence. Police said Roshan, who was associated with the Wazeer sub-division police and had been performing duty at the North Waziristan temporarily displaced persons camp in Baka Khel, had returned home when armed assailants targeted him.

Police authorities described both killings as targeted terrorist attacks and said investigations had been launched from multiple angles. Officials added that search operations were under way in the affected areas to identify, trace and arrest those responsible for the attacks.

The deaths triggered condemnation from police ranks and local residents, who called for swift action against the attackers. Law enforcement officials maintained that police would continue efforts to restore peace in Bannu and bring those behind the killings to justice despite the risks faced by frontline personnel.

Bannu has witnessed repeated security incidents in recent months, with both civilians and members of law enforcement coming under attack. The district’s location and its proximity to former tribal areas have made it a sensitive zone where militant networks have repeatedly attempted to challenge state authority and intimidate local communities.

The latest killings come amid wider concern over a renewed wave of militancy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Security assessments in recent months have warned that Pakistan’s security situation worsened in May after a brief period of improvement, largely because of a rise in terrorist violence in the two provinces.

Bannu was also the site of a deadly suicide attack last month that claimed the lives of 15 police personnel, prompting Pakistan to issue a strong diplomatic protest to Afghanistan. That episode added urgency to Islamabad’s concerns about cross-border militancy and the need for stronger action against armed groups operating in the region.

For Pakistan, the targeted killing of police officials is significant because it directly affects internal security, public confidence and the ability of local authorities to maintain routine law enforcement. The next phase will depend on the progress of search operations and whether investigators can dismantle the network believed to be behind the latest attacks.
