Shehbaz-Bilawal Meeting Set as AJK Crisis Deepens

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari are expected to meet in Islamabad today as the political and security situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir becomes a central concern for the ruling coalition. The meeting is reportedly planned at the Prime Minister House at 5:00pm, with AJK’s unrest set as the main agenda.

According to party sources, the two leaders are expected to hold a one-on-one discussion focused on how the federal government and coalition partners should respond to the crisis. The meeting comes after days of mounting pressure over protests, arrests and public anger linked to developments in the region.

PPP sources said Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will try to persuade the prime minister to open a political path for talks with protesters. The party’s position suggests that dialogue, rather than continued confrontation, is being presented as a way to prevent further escalation in AJK.

The development is politically important because the PPP holds major influence in AJK and remains a key partner of the PML-N-led federal government. Any difference between the two parties over handling the unrest could complicate both regional governance and coalition coordination in Islamabad.

The AJK crisis has intensified after tensions involving the Joint Awami Action Committee and the government’s security measures. The situation has already triggered serious concern among political parties, civil society and residents, particularly after violent confrontations and restrictions affected normal life in parts of the region.

The meeting also takes place against the backdrop of separate budget-related friction between the government and the PPP. Party sources have accused the government of not fully sharing details of proposed taxes, new levies and development spending plans ahead of the federal budget for 2026-27.

In recent consultations, the PPP has reportedly demanded a 50 percent increase in salaries and pensions for government employees, arguing that inflation has placed heavy pressure on ordinary households. The party has also proposed raising the minimum monthly wage to Rs60,000, while government circles appear reluctant to accept such a large fiscal commitment.

The timing gives the meeting broader national importance. If Shehbaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari reach a political understanding, it may help ease pressure in AJK while also reducing coalition tension ahead of the budget. If differences remain unresolved, the government could face simultaneous challenges on law and order, public confidence and fiscal policy.

The next few hours will be critical as both parties weigh security concerns against the need for political engagement. A clear decision after the meeting could determine whether the government moves toward negotiations in AJK or continues with a harder administrative response in the days ahead.
