Punjab Seeks Army, Rangers Deployment for Muharram Security

The Punjab government has formally sought the deployment of Pakistan Army and Rangers personnel across the province to strengthen security arrangements during Muharram, according to details that emerged on Monday. The request was made by the Punjab Home Department to the federal interior ministry as authorities prepare for one of the most sensitive periods on the public security calendar.

The move follows a recommendation from the Punjab police leadership, which asked for military and paramilitary assistance to support district administrations and police forces. The Home Department’s letter, dated June 4, urged the interior ministry to take necessary action so that additional security support could be made available during Muharram processions, gatherings and related activities.

A total of 137 companies of the Army and Rangers have been requested for deployment in Punjab. The proposed strength includes 61 companies from the Pakistan Army and 76 companies from Rangers, reflecting the scale of the province-wide security plan being prepared ahead of the religious observances.

The requested deployment covers at least 37 districts, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Multan, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur and several other major and sensitive areas. Authorities have sought joint deployment of Army and Rangers personnel in most districts, while some areas are expected to receive either Army or Rangers support depending on local security assessments.

Officials have linked the request to the current security environment, stressing the need for a careful and comprehensive mechanism to prevent possible attacks or disruption by extremist elements or miscreants. The additional forces are expected to assist civil authorities and police during different phases between Muharram 1 and Muharram 12.

The Home Department has also issued detailed instructions for maintaining peace and order during the month. These directions call for heightened vigilance, stronger coordination among law enforcement agencies, timely intelligence sharing, and special attention to both urban centres and remote areas where security weaknesses can be exploited.

Punjab Inspector General Abdul Kareem had earlier reviewed the Muharram security plan at the Central Police Office. During that review, he noted that security responsibilities during Muharram had become more demanding and directed officers to remain fully committed to their duties throughout the period.

Muharram security has long required extensive coordination in Punjab because large processions, majalis and public gatherings take place in almost every district. Past incidents of sectarian violence and terror threats have made advance planning a routine but critical part of the province’s law-and-order strategy.

The latest request carries broader importance for Pakistan’s internal security because Punjab is the country’s most populous province and any disruption during Muharram can have national consequences. Smooth coordination between the federal government, military authorities, Rangers, police and district administrations will be essential to ensure public safety and avoid panic.

The interior ministry is now expected to review the provincial request and coordinate the availability of troops and paramilitary personnel. Once approved, district-level deployment plans, route security, surveillance, traffic control and emergency response arrangements are likely to be finalised before the start of Muharram.
