Bushra Bibi Hospital Visit Row Sparks New PTI Outcry

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf on Thursday raised strong objections over reports that Bushra Bibi, the wife of former prime minister Imran Khan, was taken from Adiala jail to a hospital during the night and then returned to prison. The development has placed her health, prison conditions and access to medical care at the centre of a fresh political controversy.

The party said the reported hospital transfer was carried out without adequate public information and without clear communication to her family. PTI argued that the circumstances surrounding the visit had created serious questions about transparency, especially because Bushra Bibi remains incarcerated and has previously required medical treatment.

According to the report, the party’s reaction came after media accounts claimed that Bushra Bibi was shifted under tight security for a follow-up eye examination. She had undergone eye surgery in Rawalpindi last month after jail authorities said she had been diagnosed with retinal detachment in her right eye and doctors had recommended treatment.

PTI demanded that the government and prison officials provide a clear medical update, including details of where she was taken, what examinations were conducted and why she was sent back to jail. The party also called for her family, personal doctors and an independent medical board to be allowed access so her health condition could be verified.

Opposition leader Omar Ayub also criticised the reported transfer, saying the family had not been informed before Bushra Bibi was taken to the hospital. He claimed her condition required proper medical care and said both Bushra Bibi and Imran Khan should be shifted to Shifa International Hospital for examination and treatment.

The dispute adds another sensitive layer to the political and legal pressures surrounding Imran Khan and his wife. Bushra Bibi has remained in custody in connection with cases against the former ruling party’s leadership, while PTI has repeatedly accused authorities of denying its jailed leaders proper access to lawyers, families and medical facilities.

Health-related concerns involving high-profile prisoners often become politically charged in Pakistan because they combine legal custody, human-rights obligations and partisan distrust. In this case, PTI is presenting the issue not only as a medical concern but also as evidence of what it describes as unfair treatment of the former prime minister’s family.

The matter could deepen tensions between the opposition party and the federal authorities if no detailed clarification is issued. For supporters of PTI, the episode is likely to reinforce concerns over jail conditions and transparency, while the government may face renewed calls to demonstrate that prison medical procedures are being handled lawfully and openly.
