Punjab Says Friday School Holiday Will End Soon

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has clarified that the Friday holiday for schools is not being made a permanent feature of the academic calendar, ending days of speculation among parents, students and teachers. The clarification came on Monday as reports about a possible long-term change in school schedules continued circulating online.

The minister said the current Friday arrangement was introduced as a temporary response to extraordinary circumstances and would be withdrawn in the coming weeks. He indicated that educational institutions across Punjab are expected to return to their regular weekly schedule once consultations and approvals are completed.

According to the minister’s position, the provincial government is in contact with federal authorities to ensure a smooth transition back to normal academic operations. The aim is to avoid confusion for school administrations while giving families enough clarity about attendance, transport and classroom routines.

Rana Sikandar Hayat also addressed public concern over summer vacations, saying no final decision had been made yet on shortening or adjusting the holiday schedule. He said any decision on summer breaks would be taken after May 15 and would require final approval from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

The clarification is important because the Friday holiday had become a major discussion point after schools shifted to a reduced physical-attendance model. Under the arrangement, many students attended online classes on Fridays instead of physically going to school, while institutions continued in-person teaching during the rest of the week.

The policy was originally linked to rising fuel costs and wider energy-saving measures. Authorities had described it as a temporary step to reduce transport pressure and operational expenses at a time when households, schools and government departments were facing higher costs.

For parents, the expected return to the normal schedule may bring both relief and adjustment. Some families had adapted transport, tuition and work routines around the Friday arrangement, while others had raised concerns that reduced in-person attendance could affect learning discipline and classroom continuity.

For schools, the change will require timetable planning, teacher deployment and communication with students before the regular schedule is restored. Administrations will also need to manage any academic gaps created by the shorter physical week and ensure that examination preparation remains on track.

The government’s next step will be to issue a formal notification once consultations are completed. Until then, students, parents and school managers are expected to follow the existing instructions while waiting for official confirmation on when the Friday holiday will be fully withdrawn.
