At least eight women were killed and more than 80 others were injured in Rahim Yar Khan when the roof of a shop collapsed during the distribution of Benazir Income Support Programme payments ahead of Eid ul Fitr. The incident took place in Chak 123P, where a large number of women had gathered to collect welfare cash.
Police and rescue officials said the structure failed under the pressure of overcrowding. According to the initial account, some of the women had been directed onto the roof while others remained inside the premises, causing the building to give way.
District Police Officer Irfan Samo said rescue workers and police teams pulled victims from the debris and shifted the injured to Sheikh Zayed Hospital. Authorities later registered a case at Airport Police Station, naming five individuals, including the private retailer’s device agent linked to the payment operation.
Officials said the device agent has been held responsible for the accident, while the episode has again highlighted the safety risks surrounding overcrowded aid distribution points in Pakistan during high-demand disbursement periods.
