Police in Islamabad detained at least 25 women’s rights activists as they gathered to observe International Women’s Day in the federal capital. The participants had assembled in the F-6 Super Market area ahead of a planned Aurat March rally when law enforcement intervened.
Authorities said the detentions were made because Section 144 was in force in Islamabad, restricting public assembly in the interest of maintaining order. Those taken into custody were moved to the Women Police Station in G-7 Markaz.
Organisers of the Aurat March said the activists were attempting to hold a peaceful demonstration and shared footage of the police action on social media. They also alleged that access to detainees was being restricted for relatives and legal representatives, while police indicated no formal case had yet been registered and the women could be released later.
