An anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi has sentenced 47 people, including several senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders, to 10 years in prison in connection with the May 9 unrest. Geo News reported that those convicted include Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, Zartaj Gul, Murad Saeed, Shehbaz Gill and Hammad Azhar.
The court ruled that the convicts were involved in organising violent protests and attacks on military and state installations, including the GHQ Gate, Hamza Camp and the Army Museum. Each convict was also fined Rs500,000, and the court ordered confiscation of property. The case is part of the wider legal fallout from the riots that followed Imran Khan’s arrest in May 2023.
