Islamabad’s Red Zone was sealed on Friday as police deployed additional contingents and erected barriers to restrict access to Parliament House amid a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) sit-in.
PTI had announced the protest outside the high-security area, alleging negligence in medical care for jailed former prime minister and party founder Imran Khan, particularly regarding an eye ailment. The move followed a report filed in the Supreme Court by PTI lawyer Salman Safdar after a court-directed visit to Adiala Jail to assess Khan’s condition.
Speaking outside Parliament House, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said lawmakers were being stopped from reaching the venue and warned that if the sit-in was not allowed at the designated location, protests could spread nationwide. He said Khan had authorised opposition figures Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas to lead the demonstration.
Achakzai said the sit-in would remain peaceful and demanded that Khan’s personal physician and family be allowed to meet him, calling for treatment by competent doctors. Separately, police shut the gates of Parliament Lodges as PTI members of the National Assembly attempted to leave and join the protest.
