Pakistan names 19 envoys to key capitals in push for economic diplomacy

Pakistan has approved a fresh round of diplomatic postings, naming 19 ambassadors/high commissioners and consuls general for missions in key capitals and major cities abroad.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said the appointments, cleared by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, are meant to build on Pakistan’s recent international engagement and sharpen the focus on “economic diplomacy” — encouraging trade, investment, and broader commercial ties.

According to the announcement, ambassador/high commissioner postings include Bangkok, Berlin, Dar-es-Salaam, Dushanbe, Geneva, Kampala, Kathmandu, London, Nairobi, Oslo, Stockholm, Tashkent and Tehran. Consuls general have been designated for Frankfurt, Guangzhou, Kandahar, Los Angeles, Mazar-e-Sharif and Montreal.

The report also noted that the UK high commissioner-designate, Chief of Protocol Capt (retd) Usman, is set to replace Dr Mohammad Faisal, who is expected to return to headquarters later this year. It added that senior diplomats, including those posted to major multilateral and regional assignments, have previously served in the same locations and are expected to leverage that experience to advance Pakistan’s external engagement and economic priorities.
