Karachi police briefly detained Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) MPA Muhammad Farooq along with several party workers while they were holding a press conference outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) office. The gathering was part of a protest alleging rigging in the 2024 general elections.
Police officials said they intervened to disperse the crowd from the ECP premises, while SSP South Mahzoor Ali maintained that no JI worker was formally arrested or taken to a police station. JI leaders, however, alleged that party workers were picked up during the crackdown.
After the episode, JI Karachi’s acting emir Muslim Pervaiz criticised the PPP-led Sindh government, saying citizens have a constitutional right to express their views and hold peaceful political activity. Farooq also accused the provincial government of using heavy-handed tactics to deter upcoming protest plans.
JI announced it will proceed with a sit-in outside the Sindh Assembly on February 14, describing it as a protest against governance failures and what it called undue control over Karachi’s institutions.
