ISLAMABAD/MUZAFFARABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Barrister Sultan Mehmood has passed away at the age of 71 after battling liver cancer, according to officials and family sources cited in reports.
He died at a hospital in Islamabad where he had been receiving treatment. His funeral prayer is scheduled to be offered at 3pm on Sunday in Khari Sharif.
Barrister Sultan, backed by PTI, was elected AJK president in August 2021 after securing 34 votes out of 52. He also served as a regional PTI leader and had a long electoral record, including repeated wins from the Mirpur area in AJK’s legislative assembly.
Condolences were issued by senior officials including President Asif Ali Zardari and National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, among others. Leaders described him as an experienced politician and jurist and highlighted his advocacy for the Kashmir cause, calling his death a significant loss for AJK and Pakistan.
