Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has raised alarm over media reports suggesting the party’s jailed founder, Imran Khan, is dealing with a serious eye condition.
Speaking to reporters in Rawalpindi, Barrister Gohar said he learned about the matter through the media and described the situation as troubling if the reports are accurate. He stressed that family access is important so relatives can be reassured about Khan’s health.
PTI, citing what it called credible reporting, said Khan had reportedly been diagnosed with Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO) in his right eye, a condition that involves blockage of a retinal vein. The party warned that, without timely and appropriate treatment, there is a risk of lasting damage to eyesight.
According to PTI’s account, jail authorities were insisting treatment be handled inside Adiala jail, while a specialist doctor reportedly indicated the required care would need an operation theatre and specialised facilities not available in the prison environment.
The party said Khan had last been allowed to consult his personal physician in October 2024 and described restrictions on medical access as inconsistent with court directions and fundamental rights. PTI demanded immediate, unhindered meetings between Khan and his family and close associates.
PTI also urged that Khan be moved for treatment to Shaukat Khanum Hospital or another hospital of his choosing, arguing that proper clinical care should be ensured. The party said responsibility for any permanent vision loss would rest with the government and the jail administration.
Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023 and continues to face multiple cases, ranging from corruption allegations to terrorism-related charges, following his removal from office through a no-confidence vote in April 2022.
Separately, Barrister Gohar reiterated that family meetings — including visits involving Bushra Bibi — should not be subjected to political considerations. He also said that counterterrorism should remain beyond partisan politics and called on both provincial and federal governments to protect lives and property, rejecting the idea of leniency toward those who target the public.
