Pakistan’s Election Commission (ECP) has suspended the memberships of 159 legislators across the National Assembly, Senate and provincial assemblies for not submitting required financial statements.
According to the ECP notification, the suspensions cover 32 MNAs, 50 members of the Punjab Assembly, 33 members of the Sindh Assembly, 28 members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, seven members of the Balochistan Assembly, and nine senators.
The list includes prominent figures such as the Sindh Assembly speaker, a federal minister who also leads MQM-P, and several lawmakers from PPP, PML-N and PTI. The ECP said the action followed a warning that non-compliant members needed to file by January 15 or face suspension.
Under election rules, lawmakers must submit details of assets and liabilities to the ECP by December 31 each year and provide additional financial statements for spouses and dependent children on specified forms by June 30. The ECP noted that suspensions remain in place until filing is completed, during which members cannot attend sessions or participate in legislative business, including voting.
