Security sources said Indonesia’s defence minister met Pakistan’s air force chief in Islamabad and explored options that include the JF-17 Thunder multirole fighter and strike-capable drone platforms, alongside broader cooperation such as training and long-term institutional engagement.
Indonesia’s defence ministry confirmed the meeting and said discussions covered strategic dialogue and cooperation opportunities, while stressing that no final decisions had been taken. The sources, however, indicated negotiations are at an advanced stage and may involve more than 40 aircraft, with reported interest in Pakistan’s Shahpar drone series as well.
The potential deal comes as Indonesia accelerates efforts to modernise an ageing air fleet after placing major jet orders in recent years, while Pakistan positions its defence industry as an export contender by highlighting its platforms and training offerings to international partners.
