Jack Black has said one of his biggest career regrets is declining a role in Pixar’s The Incredibles. In a recent interview, the actor recalled being approached to voice Syndrome, who later became one of the studio’s most recognisable villains.
Black said he hesitated at the time because he didn’t know director Brad Bird’s work and felt the character needed more depth. He described asking for changes and then being dropped from consideration.
After the film’s release, Black said he immediately regretted the decision as the movie became a major critical and awards success. The role ultimately went to Jason Lee, while the franchise later expanded with a 2018 sequel and a third instalment now in development.
Despite missing out on the part, Black has since built a strong voice-acting résumé, including leading roles in the Kung Fu Panda films and voicing Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. He is expected to return as Bowser in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which is scheduled for release on April 3.
