PTI rejects 27th Amendment, willing to talk with PPP on NFC

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Asad Qaiser rejected the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s push for a 27th Constitutional Amendment, arguing it would undermine judicial independence. He said PTI is, however, prepared to discuss the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), framing those talks as part of a broader effort to safeguard the Constitution.

The PTI position follows government outreach to the PPP seeking support for changes that include establishing a Constitutional Court and potential revisions touching the NFC Award. Qaiser warned of nationwide unrest if provincial shares were altered, while reiterating his party’s opposition to creating a separate constitutional bench system.

Qaiser also pressed for the timely appointment of the National Assembly’s opposition leader, noting the nomination of PkMAP chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai after PTI’s Omar Ayub was disqualified. He said key parliamentary appointments and Election Commission matters hinge on that step.

Separately, PTI Senator Ali Zafar criticised government ministers’ statements about the amendment and urged that any constitutional changes be debated transparently in parliament and not pursued through executive shortcuts.
