Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said the provincial government has placed the seminaries associated with the banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) under the supervision of religious scholar Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman. Addressing a meeting of the Ittehad-e-Bain-ul-Muslimeen in Lahore, she stressed that madrassas exist to impart education, not to serve as hubs for violence.
Maryam alleged that recent TLP protests sparked arson and blockades, sharing that vehicles were torched and roads were obstructed. She urged religious parties to distance themselves from armed groups and called on scholars to help promote social harmony and rule of law. According to the chief minister, police recovered weapons during raids on TLP offices.
She also referred to plans by the group to protest outside the US Embassy, saying the state is duty-bound to protect diplomatic missions. Authorities dismantled a protest camp in Muridke amid confrontations with police.
The CM linked armed politics to national instability, recalling the May 9 unrest and arguing that resorting to force undermines any political movement. She added that the whereabouts of TLP chief Saad Rizvi and his brother remain unknown, and that they are liable to arrest under the law following the federal ban imposed on October 24.
