The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has endorsed Mahmood Khan Achakzai, nominated by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), for the post of opposition leader in the National Assembly. The decision came after a meeting in Islamabad between a PTI delegation led by former NA speaker Asad Qaiser—with Junaid Akbar and Shahram Tarakai—and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, accompanied by party colleagues Salahuddin Ayubi, Jalauddin Advocate and Asjad Mahmood.

Both sides discussed the political situation and regional developments. According to JUI-F’s statement, the party welcomed PTI’s proposal to convene a national jirga to foster political dialogue and reconciliation. PTI also sought JUI-F’s cooperation for a vacant Senate seat from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and urged joint parliamentary coordination.

The move follows the removal of Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz from opposition leadership posts in the National Assembly and Senate on August 9 after their convictions in May 9 cases, prompting PTI to nominate new leaders. Earlier this week, Maulana Fazlur Rehman had publicly said he was not interested in the NA opposition leader slot, but JUI-F has now thrown its support behind Achakzai’s candidacy.
