Venezuela accused the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency and neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago of coordinating a “military provocation” aimed at triggering a confrontation with Caracas. In a statement attributed to Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, the government said it had captured mercenaries with alleged links to the CIA who were planning a false-flag operation in the region. No evidence was provided to support the claims.
The criticism coincides with US–Trinidad military exercises in the Caribbean and follows President Donald Trump’s recent confirmation that he authorised covert operations in Venezuela. President Nicolás Maduro has previously alleged plots of similar nature, including a claim this month that explosives were to be planted at the US embassy in Caracas.
The US State Department did not immediately comment on the accusations. Washington has also stepped up maritime deployments, with the Pentagon sending the Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group to the Caribbean, while the Trump administration continues maritime interdiction operations it says target drug trafficking.
