US President Donald Trump said Sunday he could “quickly resolve” tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, praising Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir as “great people.” He spoke at the signing of an expanded ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur.

The remarks came amid fragile calm on the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier. Border crossings have been closed since October 11 after the worst clashes in years. A ceasefire, mediated in Doha and Istanbul by Qatar and Turkiye, has largely held while both sides discuss a counterterrorism framework.

Trump said peacebuilding had been a priority of his administration, arguing he has focused on ending wars rather than starting them. He claimed the dispute between Islamabad and Kabul could be settled swiftly given his ties and experience in the region.

The president’s Asia tour also includes meetings in Japan and South Korea, where he is expected to hold trade and security talks and to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. Markets are watching whether Washington and Beijing can move toward ending their tariff war.

At the ASEAN forum, Trump’s involvement in the Cambodia-Thailand truce earned him renewed attention as a mediator. Officials said the arrangement builds on a prior truce that followed days of cross-border shelling that killed dozens and displaced hundreds of thousands.
