Most Americans Back US Recognition of Palestinian State: Poll

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll finds a majority of Americans now support official US recognition of a Palestinian state, underscoring a shift in public sentiment as policymakers debate next steps in the Middle East. Overall, 59% of respondents favored recognition, while 33% opposed and the remainder were undecided. Support was strongest among Democrats, but a significant minority of Republicans also backed the move.

The survey arrives as the Biden-era conflict dynamics have evolved under President Donald Trump’s return to the White House, with Washington attempting to balance support for Israel’s security with mounting calls for a pathway toward Palestinian statehood. Respondents were also asked about Israel’s military operations in Gaza, with a notable share describing the response as excessive. At the same time, the poll shows Americans could reward progress toward a ceasefire and broader settlement: if diplomacy succeeds, a modest majority say Trump deserves credit for advancing peace efforts. While the poll does not by itself herald a policy shift, it suggests a broadening constituency for recognizing Palestinian statehood.
