The Islamabad High Court on Monday took up a petition filed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi seeking permission to meet Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founding chairman Imran Khan at Adiala jail. Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir removed the registrar office’s objections, issued notices to the interior secretary, Punjab Home Department, Islamabad police chief and the Adiala superintendent, and asked them to respond by October 23.
Afridi had approached the IHC after Adiala authorities refused his request for a meeting a day after he secured protective bail from the Peshawar High Court on October 16. The KP chief minister was sworn in on October 15 and maintains that consultation with the PTI founder is essential for forming the provincial cabinet and guiding governance amid law-and-order and economic challenges.
During the hearing, Afridi’s counsel, Advocate Ali Bukhari, argued that the registrar had initially raised multiple objections over the maintainability of the plea. The court, however, proceeded to seek replies from the relevant authorities. The petition states Afridi represents a population of roughly 45 million and cites the PTI’s 92-seat tally in the 2024 KP Assembly as a mandate for engaging its incarcerated leader.
