The Sindh High Court suspended the University of Karachi’s notification that had cancelled the law degree of Islamabad High Court judge Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri. A two-member bench, comprising Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro and Justice Mohammad Abdur Rahman, restrained the university from taking further action against the judge while the case proceeds.
Justice Jahangiri moved the SHC to have the notification declared void. During Friday’s hearing, KU Registrar Professor Imran Siddiqui appeared and sought time to submit a detailed reply, informing the court that the university had received notice two days earlier. The bench asked how much time was required, while the petitioner’s counsel, Barrister Salahuddin, requested that the cancellation be suspended until KU filed its response.
Granting time for the reply, the court issued an interim order against the university’s decision and adjourned the matter. Further proceedings will determine the legality of the syndicate and committee recommendations that led to the withdrawal of the degree.
