Ex-senator Mushtaq held as Israel intercepts Gaza aid flotilla

Former senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan was detained by Israeli forces while taking part in the Global Sumud Flotilla, the Palestine Action Coalition of Pakistan said. He was leading a five-member Pakistani delegation aboard one of the vessels attempting to challenge the Gaza blockade alongside international activists and aid groups.

Organisers said Israeli forces intercepted 39 boats from a convoy of 45 that set out from Spain last month, leaving only one vessel still en route at the time of their update. The flotilla’s stated aim was to deliver humanitarian assistance to Gaza and draw attention to restrictions on aid.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the interception and detentions, calling the action “dastardly,” and urged the immediate release of all those apprehended. He said participants’ only purpose was to carry relief for Palestinians, and insisted that humanitarian aid must reach civilians without hindrance.

The episode comes amid heightened global scrutiny of the Gaza blockade and repeated efforts by civil society groups to deliver assistance by sea. Pakistani officials expressed concern for their detained nationals and reiterated calls for adherence to international law and protection of humanitarian missions.
