Key points
- The opposition alliance has paused negotiations with the federal government until it is allowed to meet Imran Khan and receive information about his health.
- It has also demanded the release of detained political leaders and plans to challenge the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa emergency measures in court.
The Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-Ayin-i-Pakistan alliance has suspended all negotiations with the federal government until its leaders are allowed to meet PTI founder Imran Khan and receive information about his health.
The alliance announced the decision after a leadership meeting in Islamabad, where participants reviewed the political situation following the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It said future authority for negotiations with the government would rest with alliance chairman Mehmood Khan Achakzai.
The opposition group said it would not resume talks without access to Imran Khan. It also demanded that his family and doctors be permitted to meet him, while calling for the release of his sisters and other detained political figures.
The alliance sought the release of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, provincial assembly speaker Babar Saleem Swati, PTI provincial president Junaid Akbar and detained members of the National and provincial assemblies. It said these detentions followed the federal intervention in the province.
The group criticised the emergency and governor’s rule measures and said it would challenge them before the Peshawar High Court. It maintained that the political crisis should be addressed through constitutional and political processes.
While condemning terrorism, the alliance said it supported the National Action Plan. It called for implementation of the joint resolution adopted by the Aman Jirga in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly instead of what it described as new policies for the province.
The federal government imposed emergency under Article 232 and governor’s rule under Article 234 on October 11 after citing the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The development has intensified tensions between the government and PTI-linked opposition groups.
The alliance also raised concerns about conditions in Balochistan, judicial independence, media restrictions and alleged human-rights violations. It said it would approach international human-rights bodies and the United Nations over those concerns.
The suspension of talks creates fresh uncertainty around any immediate political dialogue. The next developments will depend on whether access to Imran Khan is granted and whether both sides agree on a framework for renewed negotiations.
