Pakistan and Russia have agreed to broaden security cooperation, with discussions covering counterterrorism, organised crime, cybercrime and closer institutional coordination. The latest engagement came during meetings involving senior Pakistani officials and Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev.
Field Marshal Asim Munir met the Russian minister at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, where both sides reviewed regional security conditions and areas of shared concern. Pakistan reaffirmed its intention to convert its longstanding relationship with Moscow into practical cooperation, particularly in the security sphere.
The discussions highlighted the need for stronger links between the relevant institutions of both countries. Russia also acknowledged Pakistan’s contribution to regional stability and the sacrifices made by Pakistani security forces in countering terrorism.
Separate talks with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi focused on measures against organised crime. The two countries agreed to work towards finalising an extradition treaty and an arrangement for the exchange of criminals, while also considering a memorandum of understanding on preventing organised crime and sharing information.
The agenda extended to cooperation between anti-narcotics bodies, policing institutions and cybercrime-related training networks. Working groups from the two interior ministries are expected to visit each other’s countries to advance these areas and translate the discussions into operational follow-up.
Pakistan and Russia also discussed facilitating visas, tourism, business travel and opportunities for skilled Pakistani workers. The engagement signals a wider effort to deepen bilateral contacts beyond traditional diplomacy, while strengthening cooperation against terrorism, drug trafficking, illegal migration and digital crime.
The meetings took place as both countries seek more regular institutional engagement on security and economic matters. The proposed agreements and future working-group visits will determine how quickly the commitments move from discussion to implementation.
