Security forces killed five terrorists and wounded two others during an intelligence-based operation in North Waziristan, according to security sources. The operation was carried out after authorities monitored the movement of militants linked to Fitna al-Khawarij in the area and surrounding locations.

The operation targeted suspected militant hideouts in North Waziristan, a district that has remained central to Pakistan’s counterterrorism operations because of its terrain, history of militant networks and proximity to the Afghan border. Security sources said forces acted after tracking the movement of the group and then launched a decisive operation.

Fitna al-Khawarij is the term used by the state for terrorists associated with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. The group has been blamed for attacks on civilians, police and security personnel across different parts of the country, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and bordering regions.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the security forces after the operation. The president said timely and effective action by security personnel played an important role in frustrating the plans of terrorist elements.

The prime minister said operations against Fitna al-Khawarij would continue until terrorism is completely eliminated. He added that the eradication of terrorism and the establishment of sustainable peace under the Azm-e-Istehkam vision remained among the government’s top priorities.

The development comes amid a recent rise in militant activity across Pakistan. Over the past three months, multiple attacks have targeted security personnel and civilians, increasing pressure on law-enforcement agencies to intensify intelligence-led operations in high-risk regions.

Last week, a blast at a joint checkpoint near Aman Mela in the Darazinda area of Dera Ismail Khan killed 12 people and injured 35 others. The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for that attack, underlining the continuing security threat in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

On September 19, 23 people, including 15 police personnel, were martyred in a mosque blast at Kohat’s Police Lines during Friday prayers. Eight terrorists were later killed during a search and clearance operation after the attack, while another Afghanistan-based militant faction claimed responsibility.

The latest North Waziristan operation signals that security forces are continuing targeted actions against militant networks after a string of deadly incidents. Officials have framed the campaign as part of a broader effort to restore lasting peace and prevent militant groups from regrouping in vulnerable areas.
