Pakistan suffered their first defeat of the men’s hockey competition at the 20th Asian Games on Saturday as Malaysia secured a dramatic 5-4 victory in a high-scoring Pool B encounter in Japan. The result ended Pakistan’s three-match winning streak and added fresh importance to their remaining group fixture as the race for the semi-finals continues.
Pakistan made a fast start and went ahead in the third minute when Sufyan Khan converted an early opportunity. Malaysia responded almost immediately, with Shello Silverius equalising two minutes later to bring the match level and set the tone for a contest in which momentum shifted repeatedly between the two sides.
Malaysia moved in front in the second quarter when Faizal Saari scored from a penalty corner in the 23rd minute. Pakistan responded strongly after the break, with Sufyan scoring twice from penalty corners in the 39th and 43rd minutes to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead. The comeback placed Pakistan in control heading into the decisive stages of the game.
The advantage did not last long. Malaysia drew level through Fitri Saari in the 45th minute, but Pakistan regained the lead just a minute later when Sufyan struck again to complete a four-goal performance. His fourth goal put Pakistan 4-3 ahead and appeared to place the national side within reach of a fourth successive victory in the tournament.
Malaysia produced a late turnaround in the closing minutes. Silverius scored his second goal of the match in the 56th minute to make it 4-4 before Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal found the winner a minute later. Pakistan were unable to respond in the remaining time, allowing Malaysia to complete a 5-4 victory and maintain their unbeaten record in the competition.
The result left Malaysia at the top of Pool B with 12 points from four matches, while Pakistan remained second with nine points. China were behind them in the standings with six points from three matches at the time of the result, keeping qualification calculations alive ahead of the final round of pool matches. The top two teams from the group will advance to the semi-finals.
Sufyan’s four-goal display was the standout individual performance for Pakistan despite the defeat. His tournament tally rose to nine goals, underlining his importance from penalty corners during Pakistan’s campaign. Before facing Malaysia, Pakistan had opened the Asian Games with three consecutive victories, defeating Thailand 9-0, Uzbekistan 5-1 and China 3-0.
Pakistan will next face Oman in their final Pool B match on Monday, while Malaysia are scheduled to meet China. The outcome of those fixtures will determine the final group positions and the semi-final matchups. Pakistan will be aiming to recover quickly from the narrow loss and secure the result needed to keep their medal campaign on course.
