LHC Dismisses Rizwan Petition, Directs Him to Face NCCIA Proceedings

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has dismissed Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Muhammad Rizwan's petition challenging proceedings initiated against him by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency, directing the cricketer to respond to a show-cause notice and appear before investigators.

Chief Justice Aalia Neelum heard the petition in Lahore and questioned the circumstances in which the case had been brought before the court. During the proceedings, the chief justice observed that relevant facts had not been fully presented and said the petitioner should respond directly to the notice issued by the investigating agency.

Rizwan had approached the court seeking to challenge notices and proceedings initiated against him. His legal team argued that the summons lacked lawful justification and asked the court to declare the proceedings invalid. The petition formed part of a developing legal dispute over the agency's inquiry involving the national cricketer.

Appearing for Rizwan, lawyer Umair Qazi argued that fluctuations in sporting performance were normal and maintained that the notices issued to his client were unlawful. He told the court that Rizwan had previously responded through legal representation but that the response was rejected and fresh summons were subsequently issued.

The court, however, declined to halt the proceedings. Chief Justice Neelum directed Rizwan to answer the show-cause notice and appear before the agency, effectively leaving the investigation to continue through the existing legal process. The court also raised concerns over what it described as the concealment of facts in the petition.

Rizwan had already been questioned by investigators in Lahore earlier in September. Separate reporting surrounding the inquiry has linked the questioning of Pakistani cricketers to allegations involving online betting, gambling and possible information leaks connected with the national team's activities. Investigators have not publicly announced any final finding establishing wrongdoing by Rizwan.

The case has attracted significant attention because Rizwan remains one of Pakistan's most prominent international cricketers. Legal proceedings involving a senior national player are likely to remain closely watched by cricket supporters, particularly as questions continue over the precise scope of the investigation and the evidence being examined.

Following the dismissal of the petition, the immediate next step is for Rizwan to respond to the show-cause notice and comply with the investigation process as directed by the court. Any further legal action would depend on subsequent developments in the inquiry, while no final determination of liability or wrongdoing has been announced.
