Nashra Sandhu's Record Six-Wicket Haul Sends Pakistan Into Asia Cup Semis

DUBAI: Pakistan secured a place in the semi-finals of the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup after left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu delivered a record-breaking six-wicket performance in a commanding 72-run victory over Hong Kong. The Group A match was played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Monday evening, with Pakistan successfully defending a target of 144 and confirming their progress to the knockout stage.

Sandhu produced the defining spell of the match, finishing with six wickets for only seven runs from her four overs. Her performance repeatedly disrupted Hong Kong’s chase and became the best bowling figures by a Pakistan women’s player in T20 internationals. The achievement also marked Sandhu’s first six-wicket haul in the format and earned her the player-of-the-match award.

The spinner’s figures surpassed the previous Pakistan women’s T20I bowling benchmark held by Omaima Sohail, who had taken five wickets for 13 runs against Sri Lanka in Sylhet in 2022. Sandhu’s record adds a major individual milestone to Pakistan’s Asia Cup campaign and gives the team momentum at a crucial stage of the tournament.

Pakistan had earlier been asked to bat first and compiled 143 for eight from their allotted 20 overs. Shawaal Zulfiqar was the leading scorer with 47 from 35 deliveries, an innings that included seven boundaries. Ayesha Zafar contributed 26 from 19 balls, while captain Fatima Sana remained unbeaten on 24 from 24 deliveries and struck two sixes as Pakistan pushed the total beyond 140.

Hong Kong’s Joyleen Kaur was the most successful bowler for her side, taking four wickets for 19 runs. Iqra Sahar and Kary Chan claimed two wickets each, limiting Pakistan’s scoring opportunities and ensuring the contest remained open heading into the second innings. Pakistan nevertheless had enough runs to give their bowling attack a competitive total to defend.

The chase unravelled once Sandhu began taking wickets at regular intervals. Hong Kong were dismissed for 71 in 19 overs, with Kary Chan providing the main resistance through a score of 30. Sandhu’s six wickets ensured Pakistan stayed firmly in control, while the rest of the attack supported her by maintaining pressure and preventing Hong Kong from building the partnerships needed to challenge the target.

Pakistan completed the group stage in second place in Group A with four points from three matches after recording two victories. Their next assignment is a semi-final against Sri Lanka on Friday. The knockout match will give Pakistan an opportunity to build on Sandhu’s landmark performance and move within one victory of the Asia Cup final.
