PCB Opens Disciplinary Inquiry Amid Imam, Rizwan Reports

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board has confirmed the launch of an internal disciplinary inquiry after media reports raised questions about discipline and conduct during the national team's ongoing tour of England. The development has drawn significant attention because the reports have linked former Test players Imamul Haq and Mohammad Rizwan to a wider investigation, although the board has not formally named either player in its inquiry.

PCB media director Amir Mir said matters concerning discipline and conduct were being reviewed internally under the board's established regulations. He stressed that all individuals involved would receive due consideration during the process and said the inquiry would follow standard procedures rather than rely on speculation circulating publicly.

The controversy intensified after reports alleged that the team's security officer took possession of mobile phones belonging to Imam and Rizwan during Pakistan's stay in London. The devices were reportedly retained for several hours and their data was allegedly transferred as part of an investigation. The PCB has not confirmed that the phones were seized or that data was accessed, leaving those specific claims unverified.

Mir cautioned against treating speculative reports as established facts and urged the public and stakeholders to rely on official communications. The board has declined to disclose further details while the inquiry is under way, including the precise nature of the alleged conduct being examined, the identities of individuals formally under investigation or the evidence being reviewed.

The inquiry comes during a turbulent England tour for Pakistan's Test side. England won the first Test at Headingley by an innings and 103 runs before defeating Pakistan by 194 runs at Lord's, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The heavy losses prompted sweeping changes to the touring squad and coaching setup ahead of the final Test at Edgbaston.

Seven players, including Imam and Rizwan, were subsequently released from the Test squad. Red-ball head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed was also replaced by Mike Hesson on an interim basis as officials sought to respond to the team's poor results. The combination of sporting setbacks, personnel changes and the disciplinary inquiry has increased scrutiny of team management during a crucial period for Pakistan cricket.

Imam's situation had already attracted attention after he suffered what was described as a low-grade calf strain while fielding on the opening day of the Lord's Test. He did not bat in either innings as Pakistan were dismissed for 110 and 194. Aaqib Javed, a national selection committee member and high-performance director, later called for an inquiry into the matter, adding another layer to the discussion surrounding the squad.

For Pakistan cricket, the immediate focus will be on whether the internal process produces verified findings and whether any disciplinary measures follow. Reports have suggested that penalties could include fines or bans if wrongdoing is established, but no such punishment has been announced. The board's next official statement is expected to be crucial in separating confirmed findings from unverified claims as Pakistan prepares for the final Test and attempts to stabilise its red-ball setup.
