Pakistan Raises Petrol by Rs12.90 to Rs358.77 Per Litre

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has sharply increased petrol and high-speed diesel prices for September 8, raising the cost of motor fuel for consumers across Pakistan. Petrol has been increased by Rs12.90 per litre to Rs358.77, while high-speed diesel has gone up by Rs3.72 per litre to Rs381.77 under the revised petroleum pricing mechanism.

The Petroleum Division confirmed the changes in an official notification issued on Monday. Petrol had previously been priced at Rs345.87 per litre, meaning the latest adjustment represents a substantial single-day increase for motorists. High-speed diesel was previously available at Rs378.05 per litre before the latest revision pushed it above Rs381 per litre.

The adjustment follows another petroleum price review that took effect from September 5. During that revision, petrol had been reduced by Rs3.13 per litre, while high-speed diesel increased by Rs3.74. The latest decision more than reverses the earlier relief provided to petrol consumers and introduces another increase for users of diesel, which is widely consumed by commercial transport, agriculture and freight operations.

Pakistan has moved toward more frequent fuel-price adjustments as volatility in international energy markets creates rapid changes in import costs. Petroleum prices are particularly sensitive to global crude benchmarks, shipping expenses, exchange-rate movements and disruptions affecting major oil-producing regions. Pakistan imports a large proportion of its petroleum requirements, leaving domestic consumers exposed to sudden increases in international energy costs.

The latest hike is likely to have implications beyond private motorists. High-speed diesel is extensively used by trucks, buses, agricultural machinery and other commercial operations, meaning higher prices can raise transportation and distribution costs. Businesses that depend heavily on road freight may face additional expenses, while consumers could eventually experience pressure on the prices of goods transported over long distances.

Petrol remains a major household expense for millions of motorcycle and car users, particularly in large urban centres where daily commuting depends heavily on private transport. A Rs12.90 increase in a single revision could add noticeably to monthly travel costs for workers and families. The impact may be particularly significant for households already managing higher expenses for electricity, food and other essential services.

The government has linked petroleum pricing to its revised mechanism for reflecting changes in international markets and associated supply costs. Energy-market uncertainty remains elevated because of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and risks surrounding major shipping routes. Any sustained increase in global crude prices or freight costs could continue to place upward pressure on Pakistan's domestic fuel rates, while a reversal in international prices could provide room for reductions in future reviews.
