ICC Fines Pakistan Captain Fatima Sana Over Shafali Verma Send-Off

DUBAI: Pakistan women's cricket team captain Fatima Sana has been fined 10 per cent of her match fee and handed one demerit point after the International Cricket Council found her responsible for a Level 1 breach of its Code of Conduct during the Women's Asia Cup match against India in Dubai. The disciplinary action followed an on-field gesture made after the Pakistan skipper dismissed Indian opener Shafali Verma.

The incident occurred during the second over of India's run chase. Fatima dismissed Shafali with a caught-and-bowled opportunity and then gestured towards the pavilion as the batter departed. The ICC determined that the action breached Article 2.5 of its Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which covers language, actions or gestures that disparage a dismissed batter or could provoke an aggressive reaction.

Fatima admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Supriya Das of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Her acceptance meant a formal disciplinary hearing was not required. The charge was brought by the match officials after reviewing the incident during the high-profile Group A fixture.

The newly imposed demerit point takes Fatima's total to two within a 24-month period. Her previous disciplinary point was recorded during Pakistan's first T20 International against Ireland in Dublin on August 6, 2025. Under the ICC disciplinary framework, Level 1 breaches can result in an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50 per cent of a player's match fee and one or two demerit points depending on the circumstances.

The sanction follows a difficult match for Pakistan against their regional rivals. After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Pakistan were dismissed for 55 in 18.1 overs. India completed the chase in 8.4 overs for the loss of three wickets, securing a seven-wicket victory and handing Pakistan a damaging defeat in the tournament's group stage.

Fatima nevertheless produced Pakistan's strongest response with the ball, taking all three Indian wickets to fall during the chase. Her dismissal of Shafali came after the Indian opener had begun aggressively, but Pakistan's small total left the bowlers with little margin for recovery. The captain's competitive spell was subsequently overshadowed by the disciplinary action arising from the send-off gesture.

The development adds another pressure point for Pakistan during a crucial stage of the Women's Asia Cup. The captain's conduct is under increased attention at a time when the team is attempting to recover from its heavy loss to India and maintain its prospects of reaching the knockout stage. The demerit point will remain part of Fatima's disciplinary record under the ICC system.

At the time of publication, Pakistan were due to face Hong Kong, China, in their next Group A fixture, with victory expected to secure qualification for the semi-finals. With the disciplinary matter settled without a hearing, the immediate sporting focus shifts back to Pakistan's tournament campaign and whether the team can respond to the India defeat by booking a place in the last four.
