ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has recorded fisheries exports worth approximately $570 million during fiscal year 2026, setting a new national high for the sector, according to the Marine Fisheries Department. The performance has strengthened expectations that seafood can play a larger role in Pakistan's export portfolio if producers move further into value-added products and sustain access to major international markets.

The Marine Fisheries Department said Pakistani seafood products have returned to stores across the European Union, a development it linked to renewed international confidence in the country's fisheries industry. European market access has long been important for exporters because compliance with food safety and quality standards can open the door to higher-value buyers and wider commercial opportunities.

Officials believe the sector has potential to expand exports to as much as $3 billion. The department said reaching that scale would require Pakistan to shift greater attention from exporting raw products toward value addition. Processing seafood into higher-value products could allow exporters to capture more revenue from the same underlying marine resources and improve Pakistan's competitiveness in international markets.

The latest performance also reflects a lengthy effort to rebuild access to Europe. The European Union imposed a complete ban on fisheries imports from Pakistan in 2007. Limited access returned in 2013, when four Pakistani companies were permitted to resume exports, but rebuilding confidence among European buyers and regulators required further work over subsequent years.

According to the Marine Fisheries Department, confidence among European brands in Pakistani fisheries products has now been restored. The department presented the current export record as evidence that the industry has regained international market acceptance after years in which regulatory and market-access difficulties restricted its potential.

The $570 million figure is significant for Pakistan because policymakers have repeatedly sought to broaden the country's export base beyond its traditional major sectors. Fisheries provide an opportunity to earn foreign exchange from coastal and marine resources while encouraging investment in processing, packaging and other value-added activities. The department's $3 billion target, however, indicates that substantial additional development would be required to move from the current record to the longer-term ambition.

The next phase will depend on whether exporters can maintain quality standards, preserve access to demanding markets such as the European Union and increase the share of processed products in overseas sales. The Marine Fisheries Department's assessment suggests that value addition will be central to future growth, making investment in export-oriented processing and continued compliance with international requirements important to sustaining the sector's momentum.
