Karachi Court Acquits Natasha in Karsaz Drug-Use Case

KARACHI: A Karachi City Court on Friday acquitted Natasha Danish in a drug-use case connected with the fatal Karsaz Road crash, bringing a significant development in a case that has remained under intense public scrutiny since the August 2024 collision. The verdict concerned the separate narcotics-related proceedings that were initiated after investigators received medical reports following the accident.

The drug-use case emerged after the August 19, 2024 crash on Karachi's Karsaz Road. Authorities had alleged that medical and urine examination results indicated the presence of methamphetamine, commonly known as ice, after Natasha was taken into custody. A separate case was subsequently registered over the alleged drug use, creating an additional legal proceeding alongside matters arising directly from the fatal collision.

The original accident resulted in the deaths of 60-year-old Imran Arif and his 22-year-old daughter, Amina, while four other people were injured. Investigators said the vehicle being driven by Natasha went out of control before striking pedestrians and other vehicles. Footage of the aftermath and reports surrounding the incident drew widespread attention across Pakistan and kept the case in the national spotlight.

According to reports from Friday's hearing, the City Court announced Natasha's acquittal in the drug-use case. The ruling deals specifically with the narcotics-related allegation and should be distinguished from separate legal issues connected with the crash itself. No broader disposal of all proceedings arising from the Karsaz incident was reported as part of Friday's drug-case verdict.

Natasha had previously obtained bail during the course of the proceedings. A judicial magistrate granted bail against surety bonds of Rs1 million, and she was released in September 2024 after spending 43 days in jail. The Sindh High Court had also granted her bail in the drug-related case before the latest decision by the Karachi court.

The Karsaz incident became one of Karachi's most closely followed road-accident cases because of the fatalities, the circumstances surrounding the collision and the subsequent criminal investigations. Public attention intensified as police pursued different aspects of the case, including the allegations arising from the medical examination conducted after the crash. Friday's acquittal is therefore likely to draw renewed attention to the distinction between the drug-use prosecution and other legal questions stemming from the accident.

The immediate effect of the decision is that Natasha has been cleared in the drug-use case considered by the City Court.
