PTI Files Contempt Plea Over Imran Khan Hospital Transfer
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has approached the Supreme Court with a contempt petition over the handling of former prime minister Imran Khan's hospital transfer, escalating a dispute between the opposition party and the federal government over compliance with the court's medical-treatment directions. The petition was filed on Saturday as PTI accused authorities of failing to implement the Supreme Court's order in the manner directed.
The party has asked the apex court to initiate contempt proceedings against officials it considers responsible for the alleged non-compliance. PTI is seeking show-cause notices, personal appearances by the respondents and fresh directions for Imran Khan to be transferred to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for treatment and assessment.
The dispute follows an earlier Supreme Court order concerning Imran Khan's medical care while he remains incarcerated at Adiala Jail. The court had directed authorities to arrange his transfer for treatment, establish an appropriate medical board and facilitate contact with members of his family. PTI argues that subsequent actions by the government did not fully meet those requirements.
Imran Khan was taken from Adiala Jail for a medical examination before being returned to prison after doctors declared him medically fit. Government officials said the former prime minister was examined by specialists, including doctors covering cardiology, ophthalmology and general medicine. His sister Uzma Khan was also present during the medical assessment, according to the government's account.
Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar defended the authorities' handling of the matter, saying security considerations influenced the arrangements surrounding the examination. The government has maintained that appropriate medical professionals were involved and that the examination complied with the purpose of the Supreme Court's directions. PTI disputes that interpretation and says the court's instructions required more than the examination that was ultimately conducted.
The contempt petition places the disagreement directly back before the Supreme Court. PTI's case centres on whether the executive authorities complied with the substance of the court's directions or instead substituted their own arrangements. The party has argued that sending Imran Khan back to Adiala Jail shortly after the examination demonstrated that the order had not been implemented in its intended form.
The federal government has separately pursued legal remedies against the earlier Supreme Court decision, including a review challenge concerning the direction to transfer Imran Khan to a private hospital. That legal contest has added another layer to the political confrontation, with the government citing prison regulations and security considerations while PTI insists that the judiciary's order must be implemented as issued.
The case is likely to remain a major political and legal issue because it combines questions about judicial authority, prisoner treatment and the continuing confrontation between PTI and the federal government. The next significant development will be whether the Supreme Court takes up the contempt petition, seeks responses from the named authorities or issues further directions concerning Imran Khan's medical treatment and hospital transfer.
