Punjab Local Polls Likely Between December and January
LAHORE: The Election Commission of Pakistan has agreed in principle to the Punjab government’s proposal to hold long-delayed local government elections in the province between December 15, 2026 and January 15, 2027.
The decision came during a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja at ECP headquarters. The session was called to review the election schedule and consult the provincial government on a workable timeline for the local polls.
A four-member Punjab cabinet committee, led by Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq, attended the meeting along with senior provincial officials. The commission was informed that delimitation work in Punjab had been completed, clearing one major administrative hurdle.
The ECP asked the Punjab government to submit an early plan if it wants the elections to be conducted in phases. Provincial officials argued that a phased process would help manage security, staffing and logistics across Pakistan’s largest province.
The chief election commissioner underlined that elected local governments are a constitutional requirement. The discussion also referred to the legal obligation to conduct local polls within the required period after the expiry of previous local bodies.
Punjab’s local governance system has remained in limbo for years. The last local government elections were held in 2015, elected councils assumed office in 2017, and the system was later disrupted by dissolution, litigation and repeated changes in provincial law.
The delay has had practical consequences for citizens because local bodies are meant to handle municipal services, neighbourhood-level development, sanitation, local planning and community representation. In their absence, many decisions have remained concentrated in provincial or bureaucratic structures.
For the Punjab government, the proposed December-to-January window provides time to arrange funds, polling staff and security plans. For political parties, it opens a fresh test of street-level organisation and voter mobilisation ahead of future national and provincial political contests.
The next step is the submission of a detailed election plan by the Punjab government. If the ECP finalises the schedule, the province could move toward restoring elected local representation after years of delay and legal uncertainty.
