Karachi Yellow Line Ex-Director Arrested in Corruption Case

Former Karachi BRT Yellow Line project director Zameer Abbasi has been arrested in Lahore in connection with alleged financial irregularities linked to one of Karachi’s major public transport schemes. The arrest was confirmed by anti-corruption officials and reported on Tuesday morning, placing renewed scrutiny on the handling of funds in the long-delayed urban mobility project.

According to the reported details, the Anti-Corruption Establishment Karachi detained Abbasi after an intelligence-based operation in Lahore. Officials said the arrest relates to allegations surrounding the release of large sums to contractors during the execution of the Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit project.

The case against Abbasi had already been registered on June 10 in Karachi. Authorities are now making arrangements to transfer him from Lahore to Karachi, where the legal proceedings and investigation connected to the case are expected to move forward under the relevant anti-corruption framework.

Anti-corruption officials have alleged that more than Rs7 billion was released unlawfully to contractors by the project director. The central question for investigators is whether the payments were made in violation of financial rules, procurement procedures or safeguards designed to protect public money in large infrastructure contracts.

Officials have described the matter as a serious public-sector accountability case because the Yellow Line project is not a routine construction scheme. It is part of Karachi’s broader transport improvement plan and is expected to connect Quaidabad’s Dawood Chowrangi with Numaish through a dedicated bus corridor.

The Yellow Line BRT has remained important for Karachi because the city’s public transport crisis affects millions of commuters every day. Successive governments have promoted mass transit projects as a way to reduce travel time, lower congestion and improve mobility for working citizens, students and business communities.

However, delays, cost concerns and governance questions have repeatedly damaged public confidence in major urban transport schemes. When allegations of irregular payments arise in such projects, the impact goes beyond one official or one department because citizens begin to question whether promised public services are being slowed by mismanagement.

The arrest is likely to intensify political and administrative debate over transparency in Sindh’s development projects.
