Rawalpindi Traffic Police has launched a new safety initiative to install QR panic buttons and GPS tracking systems in public transport vehicles, aiming to give passengers a faster way to contact police during emergencies. The programme has been introduced in Rawalpindi as part of a wider effort to improve commuter protection through digital monitoring and rapid response tools.
Under the plan, buses, wagons, rickshaws and other public transport vehicles will be brought into the safety network. Officials said the system is designed to help authorities respond more quickly to incidents involving harassment, accidents, crime or other threats faced by passengers during daily travel.
A police spokesperson said the installation of the CM Punjab QR Panic Button has formally begun, with traffic officials instructed to coordinate implementation across their assigned circles and sectors. The initiative will also support vehicle monitoring and provide investigators with useful data when public transport incidents are reported.
Chief Traffic Officer Farhan Aslam has directed circle and sector in-charges to ensure that panic buttons are installed in public vehicles without delay. He said the system would allow a passenger’s live location and vehicle details to be transmitted immediately to police and Safe City authorities in case of an emergency.
Officials believe the measure can be especially important for women, students and millions of commuters who depend on public transport every day. In crowded urban routes, passengers often face difficulty seeking help quickly, and the new digital alert mechanism is intended to close that gap by linking vehicles directly with response teams.
The system is also being connected with the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, which already plays a major role in surveillance, emergency coordination and digital policing. Once activated, a distress signal from a passenger can help authorities identify the vehicle, track its location and take action according to the nature of the complaint or threat.
According to traffic police, citizens will be able to obtain QR panic buttons free of cost through the Public Safety App and the Safe City website. Public awareness campaigns are also being planned so commuters, transport operators and drivers understand how the system works and when it should be used.
The move comes as major Pakistani cities increasingly look toward technology-based policing to manage transport safety, crime prevention and traffic discipline. Public transport remains a daily necessity for students, workers and families, but weak monitoring has often left passengers vulnerable during emergencies.
