PCB Announces New Central Contracts Framework for Pakistan Players

The Pakistan Cricket Board announced a new central contracts framework in Lahore on Monday, setting out a revised system for how national players will be categorised from the next fiscal year starting July 1, 2026. The move marks one of the board’s most significant policy updates for player management, even as the PCB decided to retain the current selection committee and coaching setup.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi unveiled the framework at a press conference alongside senior cricket officials, including High Performance Centre Director Aaqib Javed, white-ball head coach Mike Hesson and Chief Medical Officer Dr Javed Mughal. The announcement followed Naqvi’s meeting with 49 players from Pakistan’s red-ball and white-ball squads who are attending training camps in Lahore.

Under the new arrangement, players will be placed in five tracks instead of the earlier four-category contract model. The tracks include AB for cricketers central to both Test and ODI plans, A for red-ball specialists, BC for limited-overs players, C for T20 specialists and D for development-level players being groomed through the high-performance structure.

The PCB said the revised model is designed to judge players according to the format they are primarily committed to, rather than comparing them across unrelated roles. Naqvi also said selection will rely heavily on documented performance data, with analytics carrying 85 percent weight and selectors contributing the remaining 15 percent in final decisions.

A major part of the reform focuses on protecting Test cricket. The board has decided that dedicated red-ball players will be allowed to play overseas first-class cricket in leading competitions, while access to franchise T20 leagues will remain restricted for that group so their development remains aligned with Pakistan’s longer-format needs.

The decision comes at a time when Pakistan cricket has faced repeated criticism over inconsistent performances in major ICC and ACC events despite positive results in some bilateral series. The board appears to be linking future selection and contracts to fitness standards, domestic participation, medical assessments and measurable on-field output.

Aaqib Javed said the changes are expected to make Test cricket more attractive for players, particularly through better match fees and clearer incentives. He also cautioned that structural reforms cannot guarantee instant success, while Hesson expressed confidence that the system could support improved results over the longer term.

For players, the new framework could reshape career planning. Specialists in different formats will now have clearer contract pathways, while young players in the development track may see a more direct route from academy and domestic cricket into the national setup. The internal tier system for senior tracks also means performance can affect standing without forcing a player into another format category.

The wider impact on Pakistan cricket will depend on how transparently the framework is implemented. If the PCB applies data standards consistently and avoids personality-driven selection, the model could reduce uncertainty around contracts and help players understand what is required to retain or improve their status.

The next phase will begin with the first contract cycle under the new fiscal year. Players, coaches and selectors will now wait to see how the tracks are populated, which cricketers benefit from the shift and whether the promised data-led approach leads to stronger performances in Pakistan’s most important international assignments.
