Missing Journalist Yasir Ayaz Recovered in Swabi After Four Days

Islamabad-based journalist Yasir Ayaz, who had been missing for four days, was recovered from Swabi on Tuesday, according to police officials. The development brought a major turn in a case that had raised concern among his family, colleagues and journalist circles in the capital.

Police said Ayaz made contact with his father from an unidentified phone number and informed him that he was in the Baraqai area of Swabi district. The call helped authorities and relatives trace his location after days of uncertainty following his disappearance from Islamabad.

According to officials, the incharge of the Mansoori police post, Waleed Khan, said he was in the Charbagh area when he was informed that an unconscious man had been found near the police post. Ayaz was brought to the police post in critical condition before being shifted for medical examination.

The police official said the journalist appeared deeply shaken and was initially unable to speak properly. He added that Ayaz was taken to a private hospital in the Gohati area for a check-up and later brought back to the police post after his condition improved.

Once he was able to communicate, Ayaz identified himself as a journalist and later contacted his family. Reporters from the private television channel where he works also reached Swabi, while his brother and other relatives arrived at the Mansoori police post after receiving information about his recovery.

Officials said it was still unclear who had taken Ayaz from Islamabad, how he was transported to Swabi, and why he was left in the Baraqai area. Police have not yet confirmed the identity of any suspects, and the circumstances of his disappearance remain under investigation.

Ayaz had gone missing from the jurisdiction of Islamabad’s Aabpara police station on June 5. His disappearance triggered concern because cases involving missing media workers often lead to wider questions about public safety, institutional response and protection for journalists working in sensitive reporting environments.

The case is also significant for Pakistan’s media community, where concerns over intimidation, harassment and unexplained disappearances have repeatedly surfaced in recent years. Even when missing persons are recovered, unanswered questions about custody, transport routes, motives and accountability often prolong anxiety for families and colleagues.

After completing initial procedures in Swabi, district police handed Ayaz over to Islamabad police, who took him back to the capital. Investigators are now expected to record his detailed statement, review the timeline of his disappearance and determine whether a criminal case can move forward against those responsible.
