Gul Ahmed Unveils $230m Data Centre Plan For Pakistan AI Boom

Quantum Global Data Centre, a venture of the Gul Ahmed Energy Group, has announced plans to build what is being described as Pakistan’s largest Tier III data centre, placing digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence capacity at the centre of the country’s investment conversation. The project is expected to become operational in 2027 with an initial investment of $230 million.

The announcement was made as QGDC signed a strategic partnership agreement with Huawei Pakistan to develop the facility along with a science and technology park. The planned investment could rise to $600 million over the next three to four years, depending on expansion needs and the pace of demand for computing capacity.

The proposed data centre comes at a time when Pakistan’s public and private sectors are increasingly shifting toward cloud systems, digital platforms and AI-based services. Supporters of the project say local data infrastructure can reduce dependence on foreign computing resources while improving speed, security and scalability for domestic users.

Speaking at the Q Summit, QGDC Chairman Danish Iqbal said Pakistan was still in the early stages of artificial intelligence adoption but was already spending hundreds of millions of dollars annually in this area. He warned that without domestic data centres, the country could end up importing large volumes of computing capacity and data services in the years ahead.

Iqbal argued that Pakistan had reached a decisive moment in its digital transition and needed to act before the opportunity became too expensive to capture. His remarks reflected a wider concern among technology investors that the country’s AI ambitions cannot grow without reliable physical infrastructure, including power, cooling, storage and high-performance computing facilities.

The project also links with a broader push to attract technology investment and create new economic activity around Pakistan’s digital economy. Speakers at the summit said data centres could support businesses, hospitals, schools, universities, financial institutions and online services as more organisations move their systems from local servers to cloud-based platforms.

Pakistan has long faced gaps in digital infrastructure, including limited high-capacity computing availability, uneven connectivity and dependence on offshore platforms for many advanced services. A major local data centre could help address some of those constraints, especially if it is supported by reliable energy, strong cybersecurity standards and clear regulatory oversight.

The investment could have important implications for employment, enterprise growth and the country’s position in regional technology markets. If completed on schedule, the facility may support AI development, business process outsourcing, fintech, health technology and education platforms that require secure and scalable computing environments.

The next test will be execution. The project’s success will depend on financing, energy reliability, water and cooling planning, regulatory approvals and the ability to attract major clients. If these challenges are managed effectively, the data centre could become a landmark step in Pakistan’s effort to build a stronger digital economy.
